74 ASCP Skin Deep Winter 2024 KEEP YOUR TREATMENTS RELEVANT We are in a new era of rejuvenation with the development of so many new medications and products. Recently, there's been a lot of buzz surrounding new injectables used for weight loss, like semaglutide. If you are not using the product yourself, you likely know someone who is. The most imminent concern clients have after a dramatic weight loss treatment is sagging skin. As estheticians, we can address these concerns with the tools in our backbar or we can put our clients on the proactive path of treatment before and during their weight loss journey to reduce the sagging and laxity of the face, neck, arms, stomach, or buttocks. This type of intervention strategy stems from your routine client assessment. Never skip your assessment. Tech can be fun without being expensive. In my practice, I have four pieces of technology that specifically target laxity, lines, and wrinkles: laser, microneedle, ultrasonic, and radio frequency (RF). Even though chemical peels and microdermabrasion are in demand, these treatments are excellent at perfecting texture and tone, while strengthening the barrier for healthy- looking skin. When I'm addressing laxity, like in the example before, I need tools that work beneath the skin surface. Think of the Why did you choose to become an esthetician? Personally, I love creating beautiful skin. I started esthetics at a time when doctors weren't treating acne or hyperpigmentation, and having the ability to help people gain confidence from the appearance of their skin brought me joy—it still does. Seeing clients return monthly and purchasing retail builds my expertise, referrals, and overall business. These personal gains don't happen overnight, and they certainly don't come to fruition when you skip the assessment. Think of your client's skin assessment as sending out a ship. Hundreds of years ago, countries sent ships to faraway places in the hopes they would return with products and ideas that would fuel the local economy. Every time you perform a skin assessment on a client—new or established—you are putting tidbits of information onto little imaginary ships they can recall later when thinking about their skin. Without these essential interactions and reminders in the assessment, clients are more likely to get their skin care advice and products from advertisements and influencers on TikTok and Instagram.
