The obvious explanation for that is diff erences in scope and educational standards. But another reason that isn't discussed as much is diff erent licensing types. Every state has a standard esthetics license, but that's where the similarities end. Some states call it "esthetics," some call it "aesthetics," and some call estheticians "facialists" (looking at you, Florida). And it can get even more complex from there. The bigger complication occurs when states have multiple levels of licensure. For example, advanced esthetics, master esthetics, and medical esthetics are common names for higher tiers of licensure. These usually have a broader scope of practice, allowing professionals to perform the same services as standard estheticians in addition to more complicated and advanced procedures, like microneedling, advanced chemical peels, laser and light device treatments, and microdermabrasion. Lately, however, we've been seeing licensing swing in a diff erent direction: mini-licenses.
