Let's Talk About Aging
When I sat down to write this editor's letter, I felt
overwhelmed by the mere idea of introducing an
important theme in such few words. I would write an
intro sentence, reread it, and then delete it. I ended
up staring at a blank document for several days. Then,
as I was discussing the weight of this theme with a
colleague, it hit me: That's exactly why we created
an entire issue themed around pro-aging. It's an
impossible feat to discuss every aspect of the pro-
aging movement, let alone in a simple letter like this
one. This issue attempts to discuss at least some of
the topic; even just opening the door to discussing
aging in the beauty industry is immensely important—
so many of us, me included, have tiptoed around
discussing age to avoid discomfort.
This issue tackles the topic of aging head-on, but
with a renewed perspective. The pro-aging movement
(page 56) hopes to change the narrative by removing
shame and encouraging people to age as they see
fi t. Your clients may want to embrace their wrinkles
and fi ne lines. They may want to address all signs of
aging. They may love their smile lines but want to treat
hyperpigmentation. No matter what they choose to do,
you can encourage them with a new outlook. You can
help those who want to address aging skin through
knowledge on retinol (page 60), and you can tailor
your approach to di erent services and treatments,
whether you're treating aging skin in skin of color
(page 66) or older adults (page 72).
Aging is unavoidable. It's something we all
experience—you, me, employees, coworkers,
clients, friends, and family. But avoiding the topic, or
unintentionally associating it with negative feelings
and shame, isn't the answer. We hope you can learn
something from this issue and start incorporating
new language into your practice. You never
know what a simple reframing of words will do to
make someone feel comfortable and free to be
unapologetically themselves.
