96 ASCP Skin Deep Summer 2025 THE LATEST SKIN CARE TREND sweeping social media isn't one that involves the face—it's all about the pits. Armpit or underarm skin care is the practice of caring for specific needs and challenges related to skin in the armpit area, including hyperpigmentation, detoxification, soothing irritation, and controlling sweat secretion. All of these are ideally addressed with cleanly formulated products (more on that in a minute) and can include steps similar to those used in facial skin care. Armpit skin care is hyped up right now due to consumers being more invested in whole- body wellness practices, including the use of skin care products beyond what's applied to the face. THE GOOD Potential benefits include decreased irritation and razor burn, a lessened occurrence of ingrown hairs and breakouts in the armpit area (especially after shaving or waxing), brightened hyperpigmentation, and overall smoother skin. Another benefit people are looking for in armpit skin care is detoxification. However, there are mixed opinions about whether topical products can help detoxify the armpit area. THE BAD There is always the potential for overtreatment in skin care. Using too many actives to brighten hyperpigmentation or exfoliate the armpit area can lead to irritation and inflammation. Two other drawbacks to consider are time commitment and budget; many consumers are conscious of how much money they spend on their routines and how to get the best bang for their buck with the fewest steps. BEHIND THE TREND Armpit Skin Care Investigating the good and bad of this viral fad by Brian Goodwin THE CONCLUSION You might consider offering enhancement services, such as an armpit care treatment or a brightening underarm treatment, for clients receiving armpit waxing, laser hair removal, or body treatments. The protocol could include the following steps: 1. Cleanser 2. Toner 3. Exfoliant (if not performing waxing)—could include a physical exfoliation and a mild peel solution formulated with mandelic, lactic, and azelaic acids to brighten and smooth the area 4. Soothing mask 5. Serum—formulated with natural or gentle pigment inhibitors/brighteners, such as licorice root, vitamin C, and bearberry 6. Moisturizer—formulated with ingredients such as calendula, stonecrop, and aloe to offset the effects of heat and friction that can contribute to hyperpigmentation One of the most crucial steps we can take as estheticians is providing a full consultation to identify the results the client wants to achieve. The client may want to brighten, treat ingrown hairs, soothe irritation, or all of the above. Once you understand the client's goals, look at their current products and inspect the ingredients to determine if they will address the client's concerns. GETTY IMAGES
