Protection. Education. Connection. There's an app for that at ascpskincare.com/app 71 HOW DO I KNOW WHEN TO ENGAGE AND WHO TO ENGAGE? You can rely on ASCP's Government Relations pros to let you know when something relevant in your state occurs. We include details on what a proposed law or rule aims to do, how it may affect you and the skin care profession, who to contact and how to contact them, and any relevant deadlines for submitting comments. RULES There are strict rules that are important to remember when communicating with an elected official as a constituent. You Cannot Gift Legislators or Regulators Anything of Value There are firm laws in every state that prevent lawmakers and regulators from accepting gifts. Why? This helps prevent the appearance of corruption or bribery. While you may want to offer a gift as a token of appreciation for someone's time or assistance, this is strictly prohibited. The definition of a gift includes cash and presents, but in many states it can also include things as simple as giving someone a ride or a bottle of water. Hot Topics in Skin Care Legislation Here are some esthetics topics the ASCP Government Relations team is seeing across the country this year: • New tools, chemicals, and modalities are constantly trending, and new laws and rules are taking shape in response. • Expanding or limiting the scope of practice happens all the time, which means allowing you to do more or less of the things you're trained to do. • Education requirements are often in flux; some states require more hours, some require fewer, and some make specific rules around curriculum. • Apprenticeships are gaining popularity across all sectors, and esthetics is no exception. • Deregulation is being discussed, particularly allowing people with less education to perform services. This is something ASCP generally fights against because deregulation can undercut trained estheticians and put the public at risk.
