Working nonstop will surely lead to burnout. Instead, leave 10– 15 minutes between treatments for notes, hydration, and a quick stretch (maybe even a snack!). If you are a business owner, designate days or blocks of time throughout the week for running the business. Your "CEO Day" tasks can include admin, inventory, follow-ups, and business planning. Don't be afraid to delegate. Even if you're a solo practitioner, hiring a part-time assistant can make a world of difference. 5 Protect Your Emotional Space. For many practitioners, empathy is their superpower. Some clients come to you not just for services but for respite. For these reasons, you need to set limits, like keeping the conversation positive and professional, gently redirecting any oversharing, and offering empathy without absorbing their emotions. Creating a mental reset practice between clients helps you clear your mind and show up fully for the next appointment. Try a brief meditation, grounding exercise, or a quiet moment of stillness to reconnect with yourself. 6 Fuel Your Body Properly. You can't be your best self if you're running low on energy. Pack light, nutritious snacks to prevent crashes throughout the day. Additionally, hydration supports your focus and stamina so you can maintain steady energy from your first client to your last. To ensure you get enough water, carry a water bottle with you and aim to hit half of your daily hydration goal by midday. 10 WAYS 7 Keep Your Workspace Balanced. Keeping your workspace free of clutter and chaos will help you manage stress. Set aside time each day to refresh your workspace and make sure it's organized, stocked, and ready for your next client. Small touches such as art and allergy-friendly or faux plants will inspire calm and focused energy. Your environment mirrors your mindset. 8 Know When to Say No. Make a habit of declining last-minute bookings, favors, or double shifts that jeopardize your well-being. Protecting your peace protects your performance. Trust that the right clients will respect your boundaries—and that maintaining them will strengthen, not weaken, their trust in you. Clients value consistency, professionalism, and the calm confidence that comes from a well-rested practitioner. 9 Invest in Your Own Care. The best estheticians don't just encourage self-care—they lead by example. Make it a priority to schedule your own treatments, massages, or full days to rest and reset. Caring for others is deeply rewarding, but it's also physically and emotionally demanding. When you take time to refill your cup, you show up with more patience, focus, and genuine presence. (Find more ideas on how to do this in "Self-Care and Wellness for Estheticians" on page 60.) 10 Protect Your Downtime. When you're taking a break, avoid the urge to "just check in" or squeeze in a client. Don't let clients or staff schedule over your breaks. If you need to, close your office door or leave the premises to disconnect. When you're not working, shut down your office phone and avoid forwarding calls to your personal line. Spend your downtime doing things that truly recharge you—time for family, friends, hobbies, or solitude. Protecting your peace protects your performance.
