F acial cleansing is the fi rst and most fundamental step in any facial treatment. Proper cleansing is the preparation for skin analysis, which is perhaps the most important part of any facial treatment. Before beginning the cleansing procedure on a fi rst-time client, review the client's intake form to check for any allergies or medical conditions that might aff ect the products you choose to use in the treatment. For example, if the client has indicated they have allergies to fragrance, you should choose a nonfragranced cleanser. Look at the client's skin carefully before cleansing. Is the client wearing makeup? How much makeup are they wearing? Observe the general appearance of the skin. Look at the pore distribution. What skin type does the client have: oily, dry, or combination? Does the skin appear sensitive? Does it have obvious redness, acne lesions, or irregular pigmentation? While some of these questions may be more diffi cult to answer if the client is wearing makeup, they are still important to consider when choosing the right cleansing product for that client. Let's revisit the fundamentals of cleansing, from conducting the primary cleanse to selecting the ideal formula. Whether you're new to the industry or a facial expert, it's always a good idea to refresh that knowledge.
