The next thing to ensure is adequate hydration. A typical recommendation is half your body weight in ounces. To encourage healthy water intake, a squeeze of lemon juice and a pinch of sea salt can ensure proper absorption. Ayurveda's last key to working on skin from the inside out is detoxification. The body should experience regular urination, sweat, and at least one solid bowel movement daily. From an Ayurvedic perspective, the skin (via the lymph and blood) can visually show when the body isn't able to engage in proper detoxification. These three mechanisms can support the body's natural processes: • Bowel movements—Proper intake of fiber, adequate hydration, and regular exercise help ensure proper movement through the digestive track. • Sweating—Moving the body through exercise or sitting in a wet or dry sauna can help eliminate impurities from the skin. • Urination—Proper hydration is key. Dark yellow urine can signal a need for increased water intake. Ayurveda principles dictate that working from the inside shows the greatest results in any imbalance, especially when it comes to skin care. It's easy to jump to various products to treat skin conditions, but some clients may be more interested in a holistic treatment plan. With this understanding of Ayurveda's principles, you can help clients start from the inside to find the long-lasting results they're wanting. When you're coming up with a skin care regimen for yourself or a client, ask yourself three times before finalizing, "Can this be simplified in any way?"
