Every day, I preach the importance of wearing sunscreen and protecting our precious skin from the sun's ultraviolet rays. However, a few weeks ago, I spent several hours in the mountains stand-up paddleboarding. My friend applied sunscreen as evenly as she could to my back, but a few hours later, I had red stripes all over. I should've known better and applied more sunscreen or reapplied halfway through my paddleboarding adventure. Unfortunately, my judgment was clouded by soothing waves and unobstructed sunshine. The lesson here: Despite our best eff orts, even those of us with good intentions can forget to treat our skin with care. This incident was a wake-up call for me. Since then, I've been meticulously caring for my skin—slathering on aloe and soothing cream to the areas that got burnt and moisturizing the dry areas on my elbows and feet. I started paying more attention to the "forgotten" places like my neck and décolletage. And I've been even more generous with my daily sunscreen application. JEN ANDERSON My skin care routine shouldn't stop at my face, and neither should yours or your clients'. To celebrate skin from head to toe, this issue of ASCP Skin Deep contains essential knowledge about caring for the entire body. On page 50, Sherrie Tennessee discusses the variety of body treatments you can off er in your spa and how to put a creative spin on your menu to optimize business. On page 60, Pamela R. Springer explains the importance of balancing human touch with technology. You'll also discover a guide to Ayurveda for skin pros on page 76 and information about fueling your body, mind, and spirit on page 39. As Jeanne Retief points out in "The Connection Between Anxiety and Skin Sensitivity" (page 68), skin is the body's largest organ. It has so many jobs. It not only serves as a protection barrier, it also regulates temperature, absorbs nutrients, and allows us to experience sensations. Those functions alone are enough reason to take care of our skin well beyond our faces. Nelly Devuyst Body Exfoliating Bar "Instant gratifi cation in bar form! This little exfoliator packs a real punch and it's become a weekly part of my routine." nellydevuyst.com Éminence Organic Skin Care Yuzu Solid Body Oil "The glow and incredible smell this body oil gives are unmatched.
