We often see it as a few superfi cial things to incorporate into our daily routines: cooking with ghee, using ashwagandha for stress support, practicing yoga and breathwork. But Ayurveda is so much more than that. Ayurveda is formed in the paradigm of viewing the world and all of creation from the fi ve elements: • Air • Earth • Ether or space • Fire • Water From this perspective, everything animate and inanimate consists of some ratios and proportions of these elements. The beauty of Ayurveda lies in this fundamental theory. Each of these elements has a unique combination of functions and qualities. Note: While this article encourages estheticians to incorporate the philosophies of Ayurvedic teachings in their practice, know that some advice may be out of your scope of practice. Suggest clients consult with a health-care provider before making any changes to their daily routines. KEY POINT • Understanding the principles, elements, and common myths about Ayurveda can help you guide your clients in a more holistic view of skin care. T hough Ayurveda is steeped in tradition, this healing approach has become a trendy form of holistic care that has taken social media and quick online certifi cation courses by storm. It's not uncommon to see therapies, techniques, herbs, and other tools and resources based in Ayurveda used in the modern context of healing. But Ayurveda is much deeper than a quick fi x or putting turmeric in skin care products. Ayurveda dates back tens of thousands of years. With its roots beginning in India, Ayurveda has been a long-standing oral tradition passed from one generation of Ayurvedic practitioners to the next. Trained estheticians are aware of ingredients and the unique chemistry of each client's skin. The same thinking applies to Ayurvedic principles that require a holistic approach. Treatments are not as simple as using one ingredient to cure all. Familiarizing yourself with Ayurveda and its relation to skin can help you in daily client interactions. Your clients may ask you about your understanding of Ayurvedic principles, or you may recommend they consider adding Ayurvedic teachings to their routines. Use this article as an introduction to Ayurveda and its principles and seek more training if you're interested in incorporating it into your menu off erings.
