The skin is more susceptible to infection during hair removal, as you are opening up the follicles. Remember that although the wax pot is warming and liquefying wax, the temperature is not high enough to kill germs and bacteria. Bacteria dies at 100 degrees Celsius or 212 degrees Fahrenheit, far too hot to apply to the skin without burning. This is why the environment and instruments used for waxing must be absolutely clean. Federal law states that "everyone should be considered contaminated" and "service providers who are occupationally exposed or have potential to be are required to use preventive measures to prevent cross contamination." (See the Occupational Safety and Health Administration website at www.osha.gov for more details.) For the client's and esthetician's safety, the following protocol should always be implemented: THE CLIENT CONSULTATION Prior to the waxing appointment, clients must be advised that their hair needs to be at least one-eighth inch long for effective removal. They should exfoliate the day before the appointment, not the day of, because this can lead to irritation. Advise first-time waxing clients to arrive 15 minutes prior to their waxing treatment so they have time to complete an intake form that contains their medical and cosmetic history. Medications contraindicative of waxing include Accutane and Differin. These can cause skin to become thin and fragile. Skin could also be highly sensitized during a course of Retin-A. Coumadin and Warfarin can cause easy bruising of the skin. Additional contraindications include recent use of alpha hydroxy acid products and glycolic acids and peels, cancer treatments, herpes simplex during active stage, sunburn, open lesions, warts, and inflamed or irritated skin. The newest Brazilian waxing treatments make the experience more comfortable and effective by using potent, natural ingredients to soothe and restore the sensitive area before and after the waxing treatment.
