The job outlook for skin care specialists is expected to grow by 14 percent between 2016–2026, which is faster than the growth for many other industries.1 While spas and salons are always on the lookout for new talent, those with the proper training and certification can also find success in the cosmetics business, the medical industry, and countless other professions. With a little ingenuity, determination, and forward thinking, your esthetician's license can pave the way to a host of satisfying and profitable careers. BEAUTY SALON ESTHETICIAN Salons offer a wide range of services and treatments, and salon owners need plenty of estheticians to handle the steady stream of clients. Duties include common procedures like skin analysis, facials, waxing, eyebrow shaping and tinting, extractions, peels, and, if properly educated and certified, permanent makeup and microdermabrasion. Many customers come in for the same treatments on a weekly or monthly basis, so by combining skin care skills and people skills, a salon esthetician can soon garner a steady stream of regular clients and an appointment book filled to capacity. SPA ESTHETICIAN While many customers think of salon services as "necessities," spas tend to provide more pampering and relaxation treatments. In addition to salon offerings, the spa esthetician may also perform body wraps and polishes, spa facials, foot reflexology, aromatherapy, salt or sugar scrubs, and treatments involving mud, seaweed, or thermal stones. Because services are performed at a slower and calmer pace, the work environment can be more relaxing for both client and provider. Imagination and a positive outlook are handy tools for the spa esthetician to possess, and this career path is also good for those who choose to specialize in one type of service. 1 2
