SECRET AGER #4: DEHYDRATION When we are born, our cells are plump and juicy, with a lot of water inside. They're resilient to damage. However, as we age, our cells start to leak vital intracellular water. Think of our cells like raisins, which start as plump grapes, but get progressively dehydrated as the interior of the raisins concentrate and become stickier and stickier. Within cells, this "stickiness" traps waste and the cell is less able to hold water. We are all naturally getting drier with age, and this cellular dehydration, unabated, can cause us to age even faster with added damage. How do we stop this from happening? Naturally, you may be thinking that we just need to drink more water, but this is only partly correct. If a cell is leaky, it simply can't hold the water we drink. Rather than drink water, we should consume it. We should get our water in the form of juicy, nutrient-rich foods like fruits and vegetables. As we digest these foods, the nutrients are delivered to the cells through the bloodstream, so they can initiate cell repair; the leaks close, cells function better, and healthy water stays inside. Rejuvenated cells are stronger, so future damage is easier to handle. Consume a low-acid, anti- inflammatory diet full of vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, and embryonic foods (seeds, beans, eggs), which contain collagen-boosting amino acids.
