uniform, but color matching made it seem as if they did. "We were wearing all black," says spa director Linda Orsuto. "Scrubs and T-shirts for massage therapists, and esthetician jackets for skin and body treatments. The attire seemed like a uniform, so no one really noticed." Now, however, the spa has switched to a real uniform and guests are making positive comments on the new look. "We feel the uniforms help build brand recognition," Orsuto says. "Uniforms of the right design complement the therapist's image as a professional and we feel it looks more impressive to our guests." Orsuto believes uniforms allow higher standards of cleanliness, too. The spa can keep spare uniforms on hand in case of emergencies. "We launder the uniforms of our professionals in order to have them neat and clean at all times, in the event any therapist needs to refresh their appearance through the course of the day," she says. "The spa staff has been enthusiastic about the change, appreciating the fact that they don't need to shop for work clothing, and that spills or product accidents are no problem." Denise Baich, spa director at CleanSpa in Chesterfi eld, Missouri, says her spa's choice of apparel came from a desire to portray a "clean, highly professional, and minimalistic" atmosphere. CleanSpa combines a manicure/pedicure spa experience with the expert medical knowledge of Feet For Life Podiatry Center, which shares the spa's site. "We chose scrubs as our uniform mainly due to the importance of melding the medical aspect with the spa atmosphere," Baich says. "We chose black as the color because we foresaw products staining light uniforms." The spa orders the scrubs, but the spa professionals pay for them. Jewelry Many spas do not have specifi c policies about jewelry, and it is only an afterthought for many when considering appropriate dress. Yet, if it is worn, it can be a signifi cant factor in an esthetician's appearance, for good or bad. Jewelry should not be gaudy or loud. I had a personal experience with loud jewelry in a very upscale spa, encountering two different professionals whose clanging gold bracelets and clacking wooden jewelry were very counter to my relaxation. Some will say, "Why didn't you ask them to take it off?" But a client should not be placed in a position where she would have to make such an awkward request. To me, this was an indication of a lack of professionalism in that spa.
