Running into challenges and solving problems will help you along the way and help hone your skills—experience matters. Zenaida Fiducioso I've been in the beauty/esthetician business for 15 years. Back when I started, there was no real emphasis on retailing or Brazilian waxing. I've since overcome both of those challenges; however, it did take time, money, and desire. I'm grateful for those who helped me along the way. Paige Sacher I've seen many estheticians struggling and complaining about a lack of business along the way. It's not good enough to be OK at what you do. If you truly love what you do and are committed to the business, then master your craft and the rest will come! Lynn Gregory In school, you are given book knowledge in order to pass the state board, but very little knowledge about what really defines your success or failure in this industry. Being well versed in academics and knowledge will only get you so far. You can't just be knowledgeable about skin histology; you must also have outstanding customer service skills, above-par communication, and marketing and negotiation skills. Success and rewards are achievable for those who get that. Schools do not teach that. Kelli Ray Via Facebook Building a clientele will take 2–5 years of dedication. Plan on bumps in the road and slow periods; seek out support from others in your industry. If this is your gift, stay focused and continue to educate yourself. Rosemarie Hunter The main reason I went to esthetic school— since beauty has always been my passion— was to open my own business. I would have appreciated knowledge on which equipment to initially invest in and how to market. Glenora Luz Client retention is very important. You build a relationship with your clients by asking them what concerns them the most about their skin—and listening to them.
