Associated Skin Care Professionals Skin editor's note Touching Clients' Lives DEEP Vol. #11, Issue #6 November/December 2013 ASCP Skin Deep supports, challenges, and educates today's skin care professionals as they help clients lead healthier, more confident lives. "One kind word can warm three months of winter," according to a Japanese proverb. A kind word—and even more so, a kind touch—is a deep human need. P.S. We'd like to stay in touch with you. Make sure your contact details are correct by logging in to the Members section at www.ascpskin care.com. Editorial Never pass up the chance to give someone a sincere compliment. Many people are so unaccustomed to hearing good things about themselves that they suspect an ulterior motive when people say kind things to them. Salespeople are often taught to offer a contrived compliment and immediately follow it with a sales pitch—some "compliment"! The delight of a real compliment, with no strings attached, can linger all day. Like a kind word, the memory of a friendly touch also resonates with people. Our society is touch-deprived. Can you imagine how happy and relaxed you'd be if you could get a free 1–3 hour massage every day of your life? That's how much time our closest nonhuman relatives, the chimps, set aside to touch, groom, and socialize with other members of their group. An iconic psychological study, conducted in several countries, looked at how often two friends touched each other during an ordinary conversation in a café. In France, the average was 110 times per hour. Puerto Rican friends touched 180 times per hour while speaking to each other. How often do you think it happened in the United States? Just twice in a whole hour! The lack of friendly, platonic touch in this country was second only to England, where friends never touched each other at all. As a skin care professional, everything about your workday is aimed at helping your clients become their best selves, whether they come to you for clinical skin care, stress relief, waxing, or other treatments. Those outside the profession may think of skin care services only in terms of beauty, but estheticians and their educated clients know that the visible result is only one of the benefits. Your words and your touch can soothe souls, just as your expertise soothes the skin. Let us empower and inspire you along the way.
