Tell us more about that. AC: It's the reason I got into the beauty industry. In [my esthetics program], when we got to learning about skin of color, it was like, "OK, you have Fitzpatrick's one through six." Then they move past it. But I needed more information. . . . It wasn't until I went into my instructor program that I came across a Black educator. That's when I realized this is a bigger issue than just me learning about skin of color. It's also about me being able to teach it eff ectively. And so that's when my journey started, with me researching, understanding, and taking as many classes as I could on skin of color. My mission in this season of life is to make sure that people are not only educated but also that they see representation. We're starting to see more women and men of color teaching. But in Arkansas, when I fi rst moved back for esthetics specifi cally, there were only 20 licensed esthetics instructors in the entire state—and maybe fi ve of them were women of color. SD: In your Esty of the Year submission essay, you wrote, "I believe esthetics is about more than skin. It's about connection, confi dence, and creating safe spaces." How do you practice this belief every day? AC: For me, it's making sure that when my clients come in, they feel comfortable, they feel welcomed; it creates an experience for them. I tell clients all the time, "You will probably fall asleep, and sleeping is encouraged. Snoring is welcome." One of my questions on my form is, "What is your stress level as of right now?"
