Protection. Education. Connection. There's an app for that at ascpskincare.com/app 77 RISKS OF OFF-LABEL SKIN CARE While some off-label uses may be harmless or even beneficial, others pose significant risks. Here are some key considerations: • Ingredient safety—Not all skin care products are formulated for sensitive areas like the eyes, lips, or intimate skin. Using a product in an unintended way may lead to irritation, allergic reactions, or sensitization. • Unintended side effects—Just because an ingredient works on one area of the body doesn't mean it will react the same way elsewhere. • Regulatory concerns—Many off-label uses haven't been tested for safety and efficacy, which means results are often anecdotal rather than scientifically proven. • Long-term effects—Some off-label uses may yield short-term benefits but cause damage over time, like thinning the skin, disrupting the microbiome, or encouraging hyperpigmentation. SHOULD SKIN CARE PROFESSIONALS RECOMMEND OFF-LABEL USES? While off-label skin care use can sometimes be innovative, it's essential that skin care professionals balance curiosity with caution. No doubt, consultations can either result in a full confessional or complete denial of these "out-of- the-box" ideas but remaining professional and avoiding risk is key. Here's how you may want to approach it: • Stay educated—Keep up with emerging research and be aware of trends, but always assess science before making recommendations. • Prioritize your client's safety—If a client asks about off-label use, guide them toward evidence-based alternatives that are safe and effective. • Consider each individual's skin needs— What works for one client might not work for another, so tailor your recommendations based on skin type, sensitivity, and medical history. A thorough consultation is ideal. Skin care is both an art and a science, and professionals play a crucial role in ensuring that clients safely navigate their skin care journeys. While social media and anecdotal evidence may spark curiosity, nothing beats expert guidance and products designed with purpose. It is always great to keep in mind our commitment to uphold professional standards, work within our scope of practice, and make recommendations based on client safety. So, while diaper rash cream may soothe a breakout, sometimes it's best to stick to what science proves most effective—a great eye gel and a soothing, zinc-based face cream for the win! STOCKSY
