Protect your practice with the gold standard in liability coverage at ascpskincare.com 73 Paul Marotta, senior director of research and development at FP Labs, says understanding the project scope is crucial before embarking on any formulation work. 4 A detailed project concept brief should encompass various facets, including target consumers and demographics, desired price points, functional package design, product performance claims, safety and ingredient- related claims, and a comprehensive list of prohibited chemistries. The final piece is the synergy between formulation and packaging. It is vital to ensure that all three elements— formula, process, and package design— complement each other seamlessly to deliver a product that meets consumer expectations effectively and efficiently. UNDERSTANDING INGREDIENTS In developing your white label products, you should be familiar with the International Nomenclature Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI). These are the systematic names internationally recognized to identify cosmetic ingredients. For example, if you're looking for a product to feature aloe vera, the INCI term listed on the white label product's ingredient list would be aloe barbadensis leaf juice. "Ingredient lists should be checked thoroughly to make sure that they contain nontoxic ingredients because not all labs are equipped to handle some of the nontoxic ingredients that are required to make a luxurious, clean product," says Sally Larsen, owner and formulator of Sally B's Skin Yummies. If you're passionate about selling products that feature specific ingredients—especially if you're trying to curate a brand that features clean formulas—carefully look at the products' ingredient lists. The most abundant ingredient in the formulas will be listed first. KATE ILI/STOCKSY
