I took my California State Board test in September of 1988! Thirty-five years have just flown by in a flash. I'm sure you've heard that saying: time flies when you're having fun. I have been having all sorts of fun in this industry. Don't get me wrong though, it's not all play. I've worked very hard, but I've also enjoyed every minute of it. I purchased my first skin care center in July of 1990. Less than 2 years after becoming an esthetician. Talk about taking a leap of faith. It turns out that it was the best decision I ever made because it started the ball rolling and led me to where I am now, mentoring my fellow estheticians. I can remember sitting there all by myself after purchasing that spa (no employees came with the spa). I knew absolutely nothing about running a business. In fact, I barely knew how to be a good esthetician nonetheless a good business owner. I had no mentor, no one to reach out to. There was no internet to hop onto for answers to questions I had. There were no YouTube videos to watch. There was only me. Just me and the excitement about my new adventure. Even with all the access to information nowadays, there's a good chance that you may still feel isolated. Actually speaking with a person (which is not so easy nowadays!), especially a person that has experienced what you're going through can make a difference as to where and how quickly your career moves forward. Here's something that happens to me daily... I'll answer the phone and the esthetician on the other end gets tongue tied because he or she is actually speaking to me, a real person. They're surprised and grateful that a real person answered the phone. I believe it's important to be able to "talk the talk" with our fellow estheticians. There's something about that back and forth banter of ideas that gets our creative juices going. To me it's exhilarating and something I really enjoy! My message today is to encourage you to reach out to a fellow esthetician. Join a local group on Facebook. Better yet, start a local group that meets in person every month! Get into conversations about the industry. We need to share our knowledge and our experiences with each other. I have always believed that the more we share means the more that comes back to us. There are enough clients in this world to go around for all of us so no need to be stingy with our information. There is a ton of business building information on my website. September 2023 marks the beginning of my 37th year as an esthetician and it marks 63 years of adventures on this Earth. I know a thing or two about the esthetic industry and aging gracefully!
