PAV I N G T H E WA Y T O B R I G H T E R S K I N ! Pigmentation disorders are among the most common and perplexing skin issues that affect almost everyone at some point in their lifetime. Pigmentation means "coloring." So, a diagnosis of "skin pigmentation disorder" means something has affected your skin color. WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE SKIN? Melanocytes are the cells responsible for the production of melanin. The two main functions of the melanocyte are to produce melanin for our skin color and to protect the cell. When we subject our skin to UV radiation, the production of melanin is increased as a protection mechanism. Melanin helps protect the DNA within the nucleus of the cell, lowering the risk of possible DNA mutation. When the melanocyte accumulates damage we see hyperpigmentation. In general, when the melanocyte is damaged or unhealthy, its production process is affected, causing the skin to either lighten or darken in spots or patches. Both intrinsic and extrinsic factors impact melanin's production process which can include medications, pregnancy, acne trauma, eczema, chemical irritants and of course sun damage. THE APPROACH TO PIGMENTATION When addressing hyperpigmentation, you want to ensure you not only look at the lightening and brightening aspect, but also consider what is happening at the cellular level when approaching both your treatments and retail recommendations. The philosophy below focuses on four key areas to help achieve a healthy, luminous, radiant glow! Surface Exfoliation will help slough off pigmented skin cells and reveal a brighter complexion. Look for ingredients like L-Mandelic Acid, Flower Acids, AHAs, BHAs and Encapsulated Retinaldehyde to help increase cell turnover and reduce the amount of pigmented cells we have on the surface. Suppressing Melanocyte Activity is key in the fight against pigmentation. There are multiple triggers and pathways you want to target including tyrosinase activity, melanocyte- stimulating hormone and the melanosome transfer. Incorporate ingredients like Daisy Flower, Kojic Acid, L-Arbutin, Niacinamide, Resveratrol to reduce pigmentation in multiple ways, even skin tone and improve clarity. ADVERTISEMENT
