BANDANAS, SCARVES, N95s, DISPOSABLE, HANDMADE, blinged out—
everyone has a preferred face covering. (And how fun is it that masks have
become a fashion statement?) Regardless of your favorite or most comfortable
mask, we are now all prone to "maskne"—acne around the mouth, chin, or jaw
caused by prolonged mask wearing—and I'll bet you have some distraught clients
who are experiencing acneic breakouts for the first time.
Estheticians treat acne all the time—this is not new to us. Many of us were
attracted to the industry because we enjoy watching pimple-popping videos
and popping strangers' zits; however, many of your clients may have never
seen a pimple on their face before now.
THE PROBLEM WITH MASKNE
People who have not dealt with acne before tend to try to fix it themselves.
They pick, they pop, and they buy harsh, drugstore cleansers that over-dry and
ultimately damage their skin, causing scar tissue—which we know is much more
difficult to treat than the acne.
What a great reason to promote your expertise in treating acne! The new
phenomenon of maskne creates the perfect teaching moment to show your
clients (and would-be clients) how a professional esthetician can help them
stop the damage before it starts. Then, get them in your treatment room.
Following is the maskne treatment plan we use in our spa.
