52 ASCP Skin Deep January/February 2021 5 CLIENT STRESS BUSTERS OPEN UP THE VENT In today's climate, your client will have more questions and concerns than normal before their treatment begins. Take a few minutes to let them talk before you explain how the procedure will work, including full details of how you'll address safety issues. By discussing these matters during your health intake interview, you can encourage the client to savor each moment of their experience by keeping conversation to a minimum once the actual treatment begins. This is also the time to assure the client that both their health and their happiness are your top priorities, and that your goal is to provide an experience that not only meets pre-pandemic expectations but soars beyond them. MAKE A SOUND DECISION Many customs and traditions around the world involve the ringing of bells, which often signal the start of an activity or event. Ringing a small bell, playing a soft chime, or even using a Tibetan singing bowl at the beginning of a treatment can signal to your client they've stepped away from the stress of daily life and are now entering a period of calm renewal. Once the treatment begins, relaxing music or nature sounds will provide a soothing soundtrack to the client's experience. GIVE CLIENTS AN INVISIBLE HUG Hugs make people feel good because they spark the body to release oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin, a trio of chemicals that increase calm, elevate mood, and reduce tension. 5 Applying steady, gentle pressure in other ways achieves the same result but without the human contact people are now shying away from. Swaddling your client with a sheet (similar to the method used for infants) is one way to replicate that soothing squeeze. Another option is to drape the client with a weighted blanket. This simulates the gentle yet firm pressure of a massage, which can help relax the nervous system. 6 BECOME A ROCK STAR Whether you're sitting in a chair or being held by someone else, rocking motions have been scientifically proven to both relax and rejuvenate a person. 7 The steady motion is not only calming, but also helps synchronize our brain waves and leaves us feeling focused and refreshed. 8 Gently rocking your client at either the beginning or end of a session is a simple, easy way to both reduce anxiety and leave them feeling balanced and invigorated. Overcoming COVID-19 Obstacles The pandemic has adversely affected most businesses, but especially those that require hands-on contact. Social distancing rules limit our number of clients, and those who do show up will be wary of having treatments and concerned about safety measures. Let your clients know up front that you're committed to their safety by posting appropriate signage and making the precautions you've taken visible and obvious. And while a drop in revenue has forced many salon owners to either share or pass on the cost of masks, gloves, and disinfectants, be sure to inform clients that any price increase is solely meant to cover the fee for this protective equipment. Update your website and service menu, and place a small sign at your counter to announce any COVID-related surcharges added to the bill; most clients will have no problem paying a few extra dollars to ensure everyone's safety. 1 2 3 4
