While we can't change our genes, we can change the message they deliver to the rest of the body and how it functions. Every person's experience is unique, and their body chemistry is even more exceptional. But there is one ubiquitous thing that aff ects us all and has the most infl uence on human aging—cultural stress. CULTURAL STRESS Cultural stress is a new category of stress. It identifi es stress from political, climatological, technological, and cultural changes. It is a direct result of our interconnectedness and advances in technology. It is also symptomatic of long commutes, overpopulation, noise pollution, toxin exposure through consumables, and the incessant use of smartphones, to name a few things. While cultural stress is manmade, it is largely unavoidable in today's modern society, unless a conscious eff ort is made to prevent exposure. Even though cultural stress is wholly unnecessary for survival, it can be hard to identify, similar to the constant background hum of a refrigerator, and exists like a ceaseless ringing phone that demands subconscious and conscious management. Clients, most of the time, are conditioned to the continuous invasion of cultural stress and are, therefore, unaware that the collection of symptoms and anxiety they experience can be traced back to it. Cultural stress supersedes all other stress types and may even be the cause of acute, episodic acute, or chronic stress. The result of constant cultural stress is aging. This happens swiftly through a collection of symptoms appropriately named Cultural Stress Anxiety Syndrome (CSAS), the hallmarks of which are isolation, anxiety, sedentary lifestyle, and depression.
