76 july/august 2018 Other Important Antiaging Ingredients Alpha arbutin An ingredient in powder form that helps brighten the appearance of uneven skin. Oxidized glutathione A molecule found naturally within the skin that plays an important role in preventing oxidative damage and helps lessen the appearance of uneven skin tone. Diglucosyl gallic acid (DGA) More potent than vitamin C and kojic acid, this ingredient helps restore a perfect- looking complexion while evening the skin tone. Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice root) extract An ingredient known for brightening the appearance of the skin. Carrageenan Derived from red algae known as Irish moss (Chondrus crispus), carrageenan is a gel with excellent emollient properties. When it comes to antiaging, two of the most common problems clients face are dark spots and uneven skin tone. Dark spots or hyperpigmentation are the brown, gray, or black spots that can appear on the skin. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, hyperpigmentation can make you look up to 20 years older.5 Often, dark spots are accompanied by dull skin. In another study, researchers found that this lack of luminance and contrast within the skin tone also increased the perception of being "older."6 An in-salon sheet mask treatment can help sallow, dull skin with accumulated dead skin cells look rejuvenated, glowing, and restored while helping control the appearance of uneven tone. This treatment is great to use in conjunction with a creamy kaolin clay and glycolic acid (AHA) hybrid peel. This new facial can also be used as a supplement to a monthly brightening facial that includes a glycolic peel when skin needs to quickly look bright and luminous. The newest technologies and research are helping us move beyond "antiaging" to "proactive aging." One of the most important ways to implement this is to combine both spa and salon treatments with at- home products to engage the client in a seamless activity of proactive aging skin care treatment using the most eff ective ingredients.
