www.ascpskincare.com 55 Celluma Q: How did Celluma come to be? A: In reviewing the clinical literature surrounding low-level light therapy (LLLT) in early 2011, I was surprised by two things. First, the depth and breadth of the research and the prestigious institutes from where the research had been produced. Second, that the technology found in LLLT devices had not been successfully commercialized on a mass scale. The market at that time was made up of either cheap handheld devices that mimicked the technology but did not practice the science, or very expensive devices that actually practiced the science, but were fi nancially out of reach for most people. In those observations I saw the opportunity to bring the benefi t of high-end professional light therapy to the masses at an aff ordable price. Q: What's special about Celluma light therapy? A: Fundamentally, the Celluma is diff erent from all other light therapy devices on the market given the patented "shape- taking" characteristics of the device. In a large treatment area, getting light delivery right at the surface of the skin by shaping the Celluma to the area of treatment optimizes the light energy delivery. Essentially, we have leveraged the laws of optical physics to produce superior results with a more aff ordable device. Q: What was your original vision for your company? A: As the founder of the BioPhotas and the inventor of the Celluma, I had a vision for a company made up of a team of industry professionals all focused on a single purpose—to improve the quality of life by restoring cellular function. We are constantly bombarded by environmental insults, as well as bad behavioral habits, that impede proper cellular function. Arguably, the defi nition of aging is the degradation of normal cellular function. Creating a device to restore cellular function in a nontoxic and noninvasive manner seemed a worthy life's pursuit. FOLLOW THE LEADERS ascp skin deep special advertising section Patrick Johnson, Founder and CEO, Celluma Q: What do you think will be the next big advancement in light therapy? A: Until basic body chemistry changes, we aren't likely to see changes in the base light therapy technology. That being the case, the real opportunity for advancement is in the area of making the technology more user-friendly, more deliverable, and more aff ordable. This is certainly where we are focused. Q: What are the most important characteristics of a good leader? A: Humility and resilience. Knowing that as a leader, you often get too much credit and too much blame for what happens. Staying focused and balanced, while not taking yourself too seriously, is the key to eff ective leadership. You want to be approachable to your team members and you want them to see what you see, even when that is not yet a reality. Eff ective leadership is allowing your team to move in a productive direction, without too much "management," to be self-sustaining. Let the team do the driving—the leader is just their compass. sponsored by Staying focused and balanced, while not taking yourself too seriously, is the key to effective leadership. by
