Peace & Beauty
FROM THE EDITOR
In an industry that is based
on caring so deeply for people,
an industry in which every day
is focused on bringing just a
little more peace and beauty
into the world, how do we
continue our mission when
it seems every day brings
ugliness and tragedy?
I haven't had a chance to share with
you my experience at the 2017 ISPA
Conference & Expo, held at the Mandalay
Bay Resort and Casino just two weeks
after the Las Vegas shooting. I have to
admit I was a bit nervous about attending.
I wasn't afraid—I didn't think anything
bad was going happen while I was
there—I just felt an overall sadness at the
idea of staying there and couldn't imagine
how the conference could go well.
But it did go well. In fact, it went
beautifully. When we arrived, the hotel
itself was quiet, the staff understandably
subdued, but they were truly happy that we were there, that we hadn't abandoned
them or the amazing resort. Our waitress at dinner that first night tearfully expressed
her gratitude for our patronage.
The conference started on a somber note, with a moving observance for the
victims and a huge show of support for the Mandalay staff, but it quickly turned into a
celebration of the power and strength of the esthetics community and the knowledge
that what we do matters.
What we do matters. The world is—and will always be—filled with tragedy, but
when we can fully understand and celebrate that what we do brings peace and beauty
to everyone we touch, it becomes easier to feel hope and strength, to know our special
place in the world.
It is my wish that we all start this new year with a true sense of purpose and
continue to find strength in this incredible community. I am honored to be even
a very small part of it.
Cheers,
Mary Barthelme Abel
