AC T ION P LAN F OR 2013 self-talk supports the accomplishment of your goals, but negative self-talk undermines your self-confidence in your ability to do so. This is something to be aware of in daily life. Hear and identify the constant chatter that is going on in your head. Check in with yourself to see whether the chatter is typically positive or negative. If it's mostly positive, you're on the right path. If not, then you should take steps to get clear on where the negativity is coming from. Is it realistic (perhaps indicating a need to revise your action plan), or does it come from fear, lack of confidence, or other internal factors? When supporting the goals of others, Challenge Yourself in 2013 Need direction, but aren't sure what a good goal might be? Professional development is one goal that should be at the top of your list. Challenge yourself this year to enrich your existing skill set. By investing in your own education, you have a greater chance of growth in your career. Here are some ideas to get you started: • Learn a new hands-on skill. • Learn a new business or marketing skill. • Learn about a new machine or modality—not necessarily so you can use it in your own practice, but to keep up with emerging trends and be better able to answer client questions. • Take an advanced class in your favorite service or area of expertise. If you're already an expert, teach a class! • Start an educational blog aimed at clients, the public, or fellow estheticians. • View an educational webinar at least once a month. (As an ASCP member, you have access to more than 30 free webinars to watch any time, in the member area at www.ascpskincare.com.) • Attend a trade show. whether you're doing this as a manager or simply as a friend, one of your most important tasks is to support the development of the other person's self- esteem. Your positive outlook and openly expressed belief in their abilities will foster self-esteem and self-confidence. This, in turn, increases their ability to accomplish more. Both goals and resolutions have merit. Affirming our intention is a good thing. Yet, we all know that in reality, resolutions are often forgotten the next day, and goals can be set and reset without consequence. It is only through daily dedication to your own excellence that you will reach new personal and professional heights.
