10 july/august 2017 Time Flies Sometimes it seems the idiom time flies has become such a cliche that it's meaningless, but to those of us in a, ahem, mature demographic understand just how true this simple statement is. I'll bet estheticians are well aware of this concept of fl eeing time as their clients consistently seek treatments and products to control how the passage of time shows on our face. This issue of ASCP Skin Deep celebrates how the professional skin care industry continues to innovate and slow the clock with result-driven products, treatments, and devices. And speaking of the passage of time, the time has come to say farewell to ASCP President Katie Armitage. Katie has been a part of this company for 23 years and is retiring. I had a chance to talk with Katie about her successful career, and specifi cally, ASCP. Here's just a short excerpt from our conversation. Q: What happened 10 years ago that inspired the creation of Associated Skin Care Professionals? A: Since the launch of our fi rst association—Associated Bodywork & Massage Professionals (ABMP)—in 1987, many of our dual-licensed massage therapy and skin care professional members asked about providing liability insurance for esthetics. We were also able to extend this off er to stand- alone estheticians, but under the ABMP name and banner. As we visited esthetician schools, attended trade shows, and talked with estheticians over the years, we realized that skin care professionals wanted their own association dedicated to skin care. So, in 2007, ASCP was born. FROM THE EDITOR Q: What are some of the most dramatic (or surprising) changes you've seen happen in the skin care industry in the past decade? A: In the last 10 years, the skin care technology that drives the esthetic profession has advanced exponentially, both in terms of sophistication of the esthetic equipment and availability of quality product. The resulting advanced skin treatments have created a gap between what an esthetician learns to obtain the current core esthetics license and what employers and clients expect and need in today's skin care market. ASCP is dedicated to helping narrow that gap and ensuring estheticians' success. Q: What will you miss most about being president of ASCP? A: That's easy: the fabulous people who make up ASCP's all-star team and our brilliant and extremely talented work family. Even more important, though, are the friendships I have developed here over the years. I will also miss the pleasure of hearing stories about our remarkable members, as well as those of the industry icons of the skin care world. I, and everyone at ASCP, will miss Katie terribly, but we wish her much health and happiness as she enters this new phase of life (and I suspect we'll still see her around the offi ce from time to time). .
