Estheticians who can provide an atmosphere of relaxation and understanding, and have the knowledge of how to support a client who has undergone treatment for melanoma, can make a positive difference. MELANOMA PREVENTION With the incidences of melanoma still rising, it is clear that primary prevention efforts have not yet taken hold. Encourage your clients to follow these evidence-based tips for minimizing the chances of developing melanoma: • Minimize sun exposure and avoid sunburn. • Use sun-protective clothing, including a broad- brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses. • Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen every day. Reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating. • Avoid tanning and UV tanning beds. • Self-examine your skin head- to-toe every month. • See a dermatologist every year for a professional skin exam. Estheticians know that healthy skin is beautiful skin. Taking the time to pay attention to (and keep notes about) changes in clients' skin is a worthwhile step in being a full-service professional. Indeed, this level of care may one day save a life. Notes 1. Anne M. It is important for estheticians to also pay attention to the client's scalp during facial or hair removal services.
