52 may/june 2017 The 2000s: Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3 or nicotinic acid, was discovered between 1935 and 1937, and was formulated into skin care products in the early 2000s because of its ability to lessen the appearance of enlarged pores and help even out the appearance of skin tone. Peptides, created when several amino acids link, were introduced into skin care treatments in the mid-2000s. For cosmetic use, peptides can have an immediate effect on the skin's look by lessening the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and improving the appearance of skin tone. 2010 and Beyond: From its humble three- step beginning, the latest trend in skin care regimens has increased from 12 to 17 steps! Following a protocol that originated in the Korean skin care market, women are now employing several phases of cleansing, toning, and masking, and including serums, spot treatments, and moisturizing products in sequence every day. Epidermal growth factors (EGFs) first came to the forefront of skin care formulators in the 1990s. Based on medical research on using polypeptides to help stimulate cell growth for wound healing, some are now finding EGF ingredients to be possibly beneficial in skin care formulations. A word of caution: the actual benefits and safety of these ingredients when used topically are not yet known.
