I started in this industry in 1987. Back then, if you had aromatherapy in your steamer you were considered cutting edge. Boy, have we come a long way since then! The first high tech equipment to come along back then was microdermabrasion. My first machine looked like a big ol' ice cream cart. I had to wheel it in and out of my treatment room and it seemed to be clogged more often than not and it left crystals everywhere! The next generation of machines were smaller and much more user friendly. I now prefer using an Ultrasonic Spatula and the DermaDisc for exfoliation in my treatments. I love this combination together. Great exfoliation, no irritation. As I get older, I'm not a fan of the suction in a microderm machine. In 2003 I was introduced to LED light therapy. I have a really fun story about my first experience with LED (you can read it on my website). I started out with a machine with two LED hand pieces and achieved wonderful results. I have since then moved on to a full face panel and the increased results simply amaze me! LED is not considered an add-on at my Center. I include a minimum of 10 minutes of LED in every treatment. The next innovative piece of equipment I was introduced to was Radiancy's LHE MicroPhototherapy in 2008. I definitely don't have enough room in this article to share my thoughts about this treatment, so let me simply say, if you want to offer a cutting-edge treatment with leading-edge results, then you must have this machine. You will achieve incredible results with re-texturizing of the skin, fine lines, pore size, skin tone, redness, pigmentation issues and also acne scars. Whew, that's a lot of stuff! My newest cutting-edge piece of equipment is the OxyGeneo 3 in 1 Super Facial from Israel. This is a combination of exfoliation and oxygenation happening simultaneously (through the Bohr effect), deep product penetration with ultrasound and ending with a stimulating massage. It's a triple treat for your clients and a business builder for you. That sums up just a few of my fun tools of the trade. Some of the Estheticians that know me have officially named me the "gadget gal!" I definitely love my toys and so do my clients. Using tools achieves phenomenal results, which keeps my clients coming back for more. I believe that my toys are a big part of why my business is so successful. That and my charming personality! J Please visit my website to read stories about my adventures with all of these cutting-edge pieces of equipment. Shelley Hancock started her career in a Dermatology office as a back office assistant in 1987. After getting her esthetic license in 1988, she became the first Esthetician in her area to do skin care treatments for a local Dermatologist. In 1990 she purchased a small skin care center and successfully built it into a thriving Spa, until she sold it in 2005. At that point she began concentrating on developing relationships with her fellow Estheticians and helping them either start a business or take an existing business to the next level. Shelley has a weekly radio show called Shelley's Show & Tell on Voice America. You can listen to all of her episodes from her website. www.shelleyhancock.com.
