36 september/october 2016 a few important notes • Make sure the client is not planning direct sun exposure during the series. Sun should be avoided during this time and for several weeks just after the series—another good reason for an autumn promotion! • Have the client skip applying at-home AHA serum the night after the peel treatment. However, they should continue the following night. • Point out that there are specifi c home AHA serums for diff erent skin types. For example, a silicone-based serum is often used for mature, dry, or more sensitive skin; an alcohol- based serum is a better choice for oily and combination skin. • Ensure that the client does not have any other type of exfoliation during the series. After two weeks on the home-care prep, have the client visit twice a week for three weeks. The visits should be spaced by 2–3 days, such as a Monday and Thursday. Apply a 30 percent pH 3.0 alpha hydroxy gel peel with large cotton swabs, avoiding the area just around the eye. After 10 minutes, remove the gel with cool, wet gauze squares. Spray the skin lightly with cool water and perform a second, thorough removal. Make sure you treat the neck, too. If you would like, you can follow this with a conditioning facial treatment, but avoid additional exfoliation or highly stimulating products. Always fi nish with sunscreen. Most clients are really impressed with how their skin looks after three weeks. Take before-and-after pictures to show them! Most clients see improvement in: • The look of lines and wrinkles, softness, and fi rmness • Hyperpigmented spots • Clogged pores • Pore appearance • Skin color evenness • Skin smoothness and texture. Having a before picture for your client to compare emphasizes the improvement and encourages the client to continue. Clients are usually excited to see the positive results from an AHA series, and want to keep that fresh look! To maintain the results, have the client visit every two weeks for a touch-up peel, and of course, continue the home care. Home care should include minimal exfoliation that is appropriate for most skin types, with no less than pH 3.5 and no more than 10 percent AHA concentration. PROGRAM APPROACH It's important for the client to look at this service as a program. Combining a solid, user-friendly home-care plan with a series of in-offi ce treatments will always mean better visible results. A discounted combination series package is a great way to promote freshening services and get a commitment from the client to complete the program. Some programs' pricing even includes the home-care program.
