www.ascpskincare.com 15 "There will be complete division and specialization within the professional skin care/spa industry; business models and products will focus on one clear goal. I predict there will be four main areas: • Health and wellness focus: Massage, fitness, yoga, meditation, alternative therapies, and healthy, mindful living will become even more mainstream and will be found where people gather or live together—in urban centers, airports, assisted living locations, etc. • Advanced clinical skin focus: Medical and skin centers will be results- oriented and technology- and cosmeceutical ingredient-driven. • Cosmetic/beauty focus: We'll see more express, micro-service models that provide waxing, eyelashes, nails, makeup, and brows. • On-demand focus: Perhaps the hottest trend—clients can order in-home, on-demand treatments via an app." —Annet King, director of global education, Dermalogica "I predict there will be a trend of states updating antiquated laws and policies to keep up with new modalities and discoveries, and there will be more discussion of scope of practice for services such as dermaplaning and needling. Right now, it seems there are as many different rules as there are states." —Mark Lees, owner, Mark Lees Skin Care "I think we will see the 'daily dealing' disappear and [estheticians] will start taking control of their marketing without Groupon and LivingSocial driving the discount hoppers. And I think we will see a shift in education, with estheticians taking a more active role in investing in their [own] success. " —Lori Crete, owner, Spa 10; president and founder, The Esthetician Mentor "This will be the year that wellness goes from a buzzworthy concept to an industry movement. Everything, from the food we eat to the way we sleep, will become part of the spa experience." —Michael Pugliese, CEO, Circadia Beautifully Green The Green Spa Network's annual awards program recognizes efforts made by spas that positively impact sustainable business in the spa industry. At its Annual Congress in September, the organization named California's Spa Blue at Del Mar the Sustainable Spa of the Year. The spa was acknowledged for "making sustainable practices inviting and desirable to consumers and employees" and "pursuing progress toward a sustainable future."
