The award is presented each year to "someone in the spa industry who has made signifi cant contributions to both the defi nition and positive movement of health and wellness over the lifetime of their career." When Hungarian-born Koronczay was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 5, his mother and grandmother, both estheticians, put him on a strict organic diet and used only natural and organic products and remedies. He says his survival marked the beginning of his passion for organic living and desire to bring this awareness to the skin care industry. What began as a small, family-owned business is now a globally renowned brand, and Koronczay is a popular speaker and teacher at industry trade shows. "Hearing that I am granted this award, one that has been given to so many remarkable spa industry icons, is incredibly humbling," he says. "I am grateful beyond words." States Begin to Ban Microbeads Illinois became the fi rst state to ban the sale of cosmetics containing polyethylene microbeads last June. Used in exfoliating face and body washes, these tiny bits of plastic have been found to do serious damage to not only skin, but to the environment as well. With Illinois leading the charge, several other states, including New York, Ohio, and Oregon, are reviewing legislation as small but vocal groups continue to push product manufacturers to change their ways. Some corporations have already decided to eliminate microbeads: Procter & Gamble by 2016 and Johnson & Johnson by 2017. The pressure to ban microbeads began in 2012 when activists from the nonprofi t environmental group 5 Gyres Institute found large quantities of the beads in the Great Lakes, damaging fi sh, and in turn, the wildlife—and people—who eat fi sh. Spa Advocate Named one of Folio's 2015 Top Women in Media Mary Bemis, founder of Insider's Guide to Spas and co-founder of Organic Spa magazine, has been named one of Folio's Top Women in Media for 2015. The annual program celebrates the creativity, innovation, and accomplishments of women in media. Bemis is a longtime spa advocate and has served on the editorial advisory boards of Shape, Spirituality & Health, and Premier Spas magazines. She launched Organic Spa magazine in 2007, against the advice of many of her magazine industry peers, who told her the idea would never take off. The magazine was chosen as one of 2007's top consumer magazine launches by Samir "Mr. Magazine" Husni and established Bemis's status as a pioneer in the sustainable spa and organic beauty movement. "To be recognized by one's peers in the media industry is an incredible and humbling honor," Bemis says. "People are fi nally waking up to the fact that spa is not trivial or frivolous. Spa is a large and growing industry at the heart of healing and health maintenance." To learn more about Bemis and her work, visit www.insidersguidetospas.com.
