Create your free business website! www.ascpskincare.com 19 Get Inspired Boutique retail display is an area of your practice where you can really infuse your own unique sense of creativity and style. But if you need a little inspiration, there are plenty of places to seek it. Search on Pinterest.com for "jewelry displays," "retail displays," or "merchandising" to discover countless creative display ideas. Wander through other retail businesses. Many stores do a phenomenal job with their displays, and something may inspire your own innovative ideas. Two of my favorites are the clothing stores Anthropologie and Urban Outfi tters. Home organization stores, such as The Container Store, are a great source of both ideas and supplies. Many temporary displays in large chain stores are used only for a particular marketing campaign and are destined for the landfi ll after that. Don't be afraid to inquire whether they might be willing to give you interesting display systems when they're fi nished with them. Keep an eye out for small thrift store fi nds—interesting plates, dishes, fi gurines, etc.—that allow you to showcase products in fresh, unexpected ways. Use them on their own, or fi ll them with unconventional materials like colorful fi sh tank gravel, marbles, river rocks, or dried beans as a backdrop to your featured product. This can bring attention to items that, on their own, don't turn customers' heads. Think about whether you can repackage boutique items in ways that catch customers' attention. Earrings, for example, can be displayed on a dried leaf, a playing card or some other unique and inexpensive piece of cardstock, or poked through the holes of a colorful vintage button. Craigslist.org, Freecycle.org, and other classifi ed ad sites can help you source affordable used cabinets, shelving, or other suitable furniture. Add your own unique style with some paint, a faux fi nish, or decoupage. Signs and Price Tags Signage for any type of retail display is a chance to let your personality shine. Hand-drawn, artistic, or witty signage makes each piece of merchandise even more appealing. Some charming ways to display prices and product information include place-card holders, photo frames, and even wine corks with a slit cut across the top. Use poster gum to fi x these small display items to shelves or tabletops so they won't fall over. If your boutique retail items are part of your skin care product line or come from a similar distributor, don't overlook the marketing materials the company may provide. Ask your sales representative what is available—perhaps posters, point of purchase displays, or table tents. Even if you have to purchase some items, they may prove to be more cost effective than making your own. Inventory Control Wasted product is wasted money! Be aware of how long any perishable items can be stored before they go bad. Apart from the fi nancial loss, you certainly don't want to sell your clients anything less than fresh product. "Facing" is the merchandising term for how individual items are placed in a retail display. Get into the habit of facing your shelves properly by placing older products closest to the client, with newer products behind them (think of how cartons of milk are shelved in the supermarket). This helps you sell the older items fi rst. Thrift stores are a great source of unusual dishes and other small items for creative displays. Almost anything can become an attractive display container. Adding colored pebbles to the bowl on the left makes it visually appealing and also helps hold the cards upright.
