GUA SHA EXFOLIATION To use the gua sha tool, hold it at a low angle (less than 45 degrees) and use a back-and-forth movement with light to moderate pressure. The skin will become somewhat reddened, but should not be highly inflamed or painful. Check in with the client to make sure the pressure is comfortable. Do not use the tool on the neck or around the eyes. • Apply jojoba oil, or another oil appropriate for the client's skin type, all over the face. • Start with the tool at the forehead, stroking upward from the brows to the hairline with a back-and-forth motion. • Work across the forehead from side to side. • Work outward on the cheeks. • Work upward along the jawline. 3. JADE ROLLER WITH SERUM • Apply a serum appropriate for the client's skin condition, or a general hydrating serum. • Roll lightly with the tool, starting at the neck and rolling up to the jawline. • Roll along the jawline toward the ears. • Roll upward around the mouth, along the nasal labial folds. • Roll outward from the cheeks toward the temples. • Roll upward on the forehead from brows to hairline. • Roll across the forehead from the center toward the temples. • Apply eye cream and finish by rolling around the eyes. Video Extra: Read this article online at www.ascpskindeepdigital.com to see a video demonstration of jade rolling. Tip Enhance the theme of this facial with appropriate music. There is plenty of spa music available that uses Asian instruments—At Peace Media (www.atpeacemedia.com) is one good source. 4. MASK AND FINISH • Place cool pads on the eyes. • Apply a cream or gel mask and perform your usual massage or other treatment on head, neck and chest, or hands for 10 minutes while the mask is working. • Remove mask with a warm towel. • Apply hydrating cream and SPF. Enhanced Relaxation Eastern techniques can really help enhance the relaxation of your clients and improve their skin. It's important to note, however, that a lot of additional education is necessary to truly understand the range of therapeutic uses of these tools, especially if you want to learn TCM. For the purpose of stress reduction, though, these tools are easy to use and will be a simple, effective, and enjoyable addition to your facials.
