I recently had an interaction with one of my vendors and a group of estheticians on a Facebook forum that left me feeling out of balance and off track with my usual positive way of being. Those of you who know me know that I believe in looking for the positive and not wallowing in the muck for more than a second, but sometimes in life we are challenged to see if we can practice what we preach. This interaction stopped me in my tracks and had me take a good look at myself and my reaction. I'll be honest with you: I went through the whole gamut of emotions. Anger, hurt, betrayal, revenge … oh, I could go on! But when I stopped and really checked in, I realized that none of those emotions were going to serve me. A closed heart and mind would only block the positive from coming my way. Here's the tricky part. When we are knee deep in the muck and it feels like such a long drudge to get out, how do we start? What do we do to turn it around when we feel so lost? The first thing I did was to start counting my blessings. I marked off each person, place, and thing in my life that I was grateful for. My spirit immediately began to soar. The second thing I did was begin to look at the lesson to be learned. There is always a bigger, brighter picture, even if we can't see it at the moment or can't even imagine that there could possibly be one. Just knowing that brings immediate relief. The day this all went down, a wonderful friend of mine, Lori Crete, sent me a link to a YouTube video with Oprah and Marianne Williamson titled "Recognizing Miracles in Your Life." As Oprah would say, I had an "a-ha moment" while watching this 3-minute video. I highly recommend watching it. The link is on my website. Those of you that get my monthly newsletters know that I end it with what I call "Food for Thought." I'd like to end this article with this food for thought from Ann Landers. "If I were asked to give what I consider the single most useful bit of advice for all humanity, it would be this: Expect trouble as an inevitable part of life and when it comes, hold your head high, look it squarely in the eye, and say, 'I will be bigger than you. You cannot defeat me.'"
