Who are you? How are you different from the other skin care professionals in your area? Creating an original identity for your practice doesn't mean reinventing yourself as a person, but it does mean understanding your own uniqueness and putting in the effort to show it off. Signature services, specials of the week, and ingredients of the month—you can build it all, but will they come? Not unless you can tell everyone what makes you special. Being original doesn't happen spontaneously. To be truly unique, different, creative, new, and exciting in the world of skin care takes a little bit of work and some self-examination. Here are four questions to consider. 1. Who am I? Take out a pen and paper and sum up, in a paragraph or two, who you are and what your real passion is—in life, not just in your skin care practice. You might be passionate about nature, health, wellness, a particular lifestyle or attitude, family, food—anything! This is who you are. You are not the product you carry at your business. Product lines will come and go. Worry less about the products you're carrying and more about the vision you're sharing. What techniques or treatment goals are your favorites? Consider creating your own signature service with the ingredients and techniques that best augment your core services and reflect your desired personal image. Another way to do this is by allowing clients to customize the existing services on your menu. Or, like some skin care practices, you can sell blocks of time instead of specific treatments. The bottom line is, don't let others define you. You decide who you are and who you want to be. Get connected to your peers @ www.skincareprofessionals.com 31
