48 ASCP Skin Deep Summer 2026 Knowledgeable estheticians think critically, analyze thoroughly, and customize strategically. Today's online booking culture has amplifi ed this issue. Clients often choose services based on catchy descriptions and trending facial names rather than professional guidance. Many estheticians only check contraindications and proceed with the client's selection instead of performing a comprehensive consultation and skin analysis. The result? Clients receive what they want instead of what they need. This approach may be convenient, but it's not professional skin care. True expertise means confi dently educating clients and redirecting treatments when necessary—even when it means changing their original booking. IN AN INDUSTRY OVERFLOWING with opportunity, innovation, and access to education, it's surprising how many estheticians limit themselves by not investing in their own growth. Research, ingredient knowledge, continuing education (CE), and professional self-care are not optional luxuries— they are essential pillars of success. Yet far too many professionals remain comfortable performing the same cookie-cutter facials, following the same protocols, and relying solely on product brand instructions rather than developing true mastery of skin science. If everyone performs the same services using the same products without a strong foundation in anatomy and physiology, technology, ingredient chemistry, and professional ethics, where does that leave our industry? More importantly, where does that leave you as a licensed professional? Technical skill alone does not separate average estheticians from exceptional ones; knowledge does. You might say, "I'm a great esthetician," and you may be. But the truth is, there are far more robotic estheticians than knowledgeable estheticians. Robotic estheticians operate on autopilot, repeating routines without adapting treatments based on individual skin needs.
