me: Graduate high school, go to college, get a corporate-America job with great benefits, retire, live your best life. It actually took me talking to my baby sister one night [after the layoff], and her exact words to me were, "What's your passion?" And I was like, "Huh?" And she was like, "You know, what would you do for free?" That made me start thinking. I never stopped doing makeup. I've been doing makeup since I was in high school. I was the go-to person for prom. That's what ended up getting me back into the beauty industry and not just looking at it as a side thing or something I do for fun or a hobby. SD: When you started your instructor program, you were also pregnant with your son. What challenges did you encounter while navigating pregnancy and school at the same time? AC: Oh, every challenge you can think of. Morning sickness was horrible. When I went to school for my instructor program, they called me into the office on my first day. And they told me, "Hey, we're going to transfer you to the Chicago campus." I had never been on the train, never been on the bus, never really gone into the heart of downtown Chicago. So, my cousin took me on a field trip on how to navigate the train. I had to plan my whole day out, and I did that every single day, without being late, while pregnant. On the Importance of Educating About Skin of Color "My biggest thing in the industry is making sure that people understand anybody can do skin. Anybody can understand skin. All my students I've taught, they may not look like me, but they're going to know how to treat skin like mine. I'm going to teach everybody the same thing and make sure everybody understands it." —Armenthia Carr Expand your offerings safely with Advanced Esthetics Insurance at ascpskincare.com 61
