GET T Y IMAGES NEEM: ASTRINGENT, BITTER Neem is a great bitter herb. It's cooling to the body, thus great for inflammatory conditions that may cause acne, hives, or other flare-ups. Neem is one of the best cleansers of the skin and is a go-to in Ayurvedic medicine. Neem is bitter and astringent and is easily taken through tablets, but fresh neem juice can typically be found at a local Asian grocery store. The potency will be incredible, but sometimes the easier route of tablets is best. ROSE: ASTRINGENT, BITTER, PUNGENT Rose works similarly to hibiscus. It's quite astringent (and not what we normally get if ordering a drink with rose in public). Rose purifies and brightens with its vitamin C content. Rose can also be used both internally and externally. TURMERIC: ASTRINGENT, BITTER, PUNGENT Turmeric is the "king of herbs" in many ancient traditions. It's purifying, cleansing, and anti- inflammatory, among other things. Turmeric cleanses deeply while brightening at the same time. Some of my favorite ways to take it are mixed with equal portions of honey (e.g., 1 teaspoon turmeric powder with 1 teaspoon honey) for daily maintenance, added to a warm cup of milk, or in a juice with ginger. All these methods help remove impurities and brighten the skin. CONCLUSION While these herbs are great to take internally and support healing from within, clients can also play with making various face masks and packs for external application. Mixing these herbs with foods like yogurt, milk, honey, or avocado can increase their potency. However, as with anything, it's important to make sure that consistency wins. Many herbal paths require diligence, patience, and discipline. These plants work deep within, so it often takes time for the magic to happen. And be sure clients do their due diligence and research their own herbal path. No two skin microbiomes are the same, which means no product will work the same for everyone. Each of us is beautifully unique, and comparison only pulls us further from understanding our bodies. Everything you place in and on the body is absorbed, communicated, and asked to do a job. True healing begins when we recognize that healthy skin is also an inside-out process. When clients connect to self and skin through herbal allies, skin begins to restore balance. Glowing skin isn't created by chasing trends—it's cultivated through nourishment, consistency, and trust in the body's innate wisdom. Dried turmeric powder
