It's known for its soothing and moisturizing benefits. • Hypericum perforatum extract, also called St. John's Wort, can help balance and sooth the skin. It should be noted that St. John's Wort may interact with some medications, so clients should consult their primary care provider before incorporating this ingredient. • Salvia ocinalis extract, or sage, is obtained by extracting from a small evergreen perennial native to the Mediterranean region. It's known for its skin- conditioning and soothing properties. • Trifolium pratense, or red clover, is rich in plant hormones. Red clover isoflavones have the potential to reduce wrinkles and increase collagen. 12 Sodium Hyaluronate and Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid Sodium hyaluronate is the sodium salt of hyaluronic acid and is the most common form of hyaluronic acid to increase moisture in the skin. Hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid has lower molecule weight, so it can penetrate deeper into the skin's surface. Hyaluronic acid is a natural moisturizing polysaccharide prevalently found in the skin that is known to hold 1,000 times its weight in water. When diff erent molecular weights of hyaluronic acid are used in a formulation, it can have a synergistic eff ect, performing multiple skin care functions to enhance skin moisturization. In the body, hyaluronic acid is known to help keep skin moisturized, repair skin tissue, transport nutrients in the blood to skin cells, serve as a cushion to lubricate and protect against damage, and contribute to resilience and suppleness of the skin. As the body ages, natural hyaluronic acid levels decrease, leading to loss of moisture and elasticity, and contributing to the formation of lines and wrinkles. 10 In skin care, benefi ts to using products with sodium hyaluronate and hyaluronic acid include intense hydration and improved appearance of wrinkles. Mastic Oil and Water Known as the "tears of Chios," mastic is an ivory-colored resin with a balsam-like scent derived from the mastic tree. Although cultivated in other areas, the mastic trees in the southern tip of Chios in the Aegean Sea are the most legendary. This ingredient is known to have multiple benefi ts: reducing the appearance of oil and pore size, reducing dryness, and reducing the appearance of fi ne lines and dark spots. 11 Botanical Extracts There are several botanical extracts known to provide hydration and correct signs of aging. • Bellis perennis, or the common daisy, has been shown to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, helping to create a more even-toned appearance of the skin. • Chamomilla recutita (matricaria) extract, or chamomile, is made from the daisy-
