The
Scope
In a recent report from research agency Mintel, the
US sun care and skin protection market increased
an estimated 7.4 percent in 2023, demonstrating
an increased consumer focus on sun protection.
The report also conveys an expectation that brands
in the global sun care industry will continue to
expand functionality of sun care products and
highlight the risks of visible light, infrared, and
ultraviolet (UV) rays.
It's important to educate your clients about
choosing the right sunscreen and applying it
effectively. In Environmental Working Group's
(EWG) 18th annual guide to sunscreens, only one
in four—out of 1,700 products tested—meet the
standards for ingredient safety and sun protection
efficacy. These EWG-determined standards include
products being free of specific harmful substances
and offering sufficient defense against UVA and
UVB rays. Remind your clients to read ingredient
labels and to keep in mind that some SPF claims
can be clever marketing tricks and not always
indicators of good protection.
