This fascination with skin care and self-care started thanks to a book my mother owned, The Body Book: Recipes for Natural Body Care. Simply put, I was enthralled by it. I spent hours fl ipping through the pages, memorizing recipes, and dreaming of how I would have perfect skin. I was 11—I already had perfect skin. But that didn't stop me. Whenever I had a friend over for a sleepover, I would make it a spa night. We started by submerging our hands in a paraffi n wax kit and peeling off the hardened wax to reveal soft, supple skin. Then, we washed our faces, opened our pores over one of the many facial steamer recipes, and slathered our faces with whatever face mask concoction I could make with the ingredients in my parents' pantry. So started a lifelong love for skin care. I no longer slather my face with DIY masks (thank goodness!), but I still enjoy the meditation of an at-home routine and a visit to the spa. I know skin care is something I'll always appreciate. Skin care is for life.
