They either are or they aren't. "I love what I do and often say that I have the best job in the world," Kuehn says. "Mostly because I have such a passion for helping, but also because everyone who wants to know what I teach does too. Women who support women and their successes also want to spread that love to others." Currin agrees. "Usually, estheticians who are empathetic and have compassion are the best to offer services to clients with health challenges. However, every salon and spa therapist should have training, as you never know when you may need the knowledge and skills." What are some considerations esties need to keep in mind when treating cancer patients? "Estheticians need to know that sometimes too little information, and therefore lack of modifications, can cause harm—psychologically and physically, or both," Currin says. "Rather, be honest with the client if you don't have the knowledge or the skills to work with a client with a health challenge. There are ways to refer out or reschedule without saying flat-out no." How do I choose where to find this type of advanced training? What is the process? Kuehn says, "As with any investment in time and money, you want to do the research first. There are many people who teach this topic. I always suggest that [esties] look at each website, see what will be taught, and choose the one that best fits them. Then, find someone (or a few people) who have taken the course, and talk with them." Currin adds, "Select [teaching] that offers training for different learning styles.
