You may not be able to do what you expect right away, but don't think that a roadblock is the end . . . it's just something to go around." —Regina King Q. What coping skills/self-care do you turn to when things become overwhelming? A. I talk to God and give my problems to Him. I can't fix them anyway. Then, I absorb all the serotonin I can get from my son! When we spend time talking, cooking, playing, and just being a family, I feel refreshed by him. Q. What advice do you have for esties who want to go out on their own? A. It is very possible, but it is also challenging. Be sure you understand the laws of your state when it comes to your business structure. Taking business classes and being able to ask questions of those who have done it well have been very helpful to me. Q. How do you see 2022 going? A. I am hoping this year I will be able to build on my oncology focus and get to those who need therapy. I am hoping I'll be able to get in clinic and offer services at no charge to the client. Q. What advice do you have for other esties who may want to specialize in treatments for cancer patients? A. Get certified specifically in oncology care. Don't start without it. Q. Where do you see yourself in five years? ten years? A. I would love to have a nonprofit, helping breast cancer patients find cancer care in all aspects—medical to esthetics. I don't know what that looks like right now, but I would like to involve my son and make this a part of his legacy as well. After all, he went through every bit of the fight with me. Q. How has ASCP supported you or played a role in your journey as an esthetician? A. ASCP has been ever present on my journey since I was a student! Regarding insurance, this was really the only esty- specific organization I was encouraged to join, because of the specific knowledge of laws and regulations associated with our industry. When it comes to education, connections, and being up on the latest trends and pertinent information, the ASCP website is priceless. Q. Is there anything else you'd like to share about your experiences as an esthetician, cancer survivor, single parent, etc.? A. Life will surely hand you struggles, so don't be totally single focused, because you will have to pivot. You may not be able to do what you expect right away, but don't think that a roadblock is the end . . . it's just something to go around.
