8 ASCP Skin Deep May/June 2021
A Little Light
AS I WRITE THIS, COVID19 vaccinations are in full swing,
with mass vaccination sites opening across the country and
more than 2 million doses administered each day. We still
have a way to go, but I see a light at the end of the proverbial
tunnel.
This is an exhausting time lled with fear and
uncertainty, and I can't say enough (I say it all the time) how
proud and amazed I am with the power and determination
of estheticians everywhere to keep their businesses alive.
You are staying strong, and I continue to be inspired by
your strength.
In this issue, we dig deep to answer the question, "What
makes an esthetician great?" We asked our members,
industry experts, and some of our favorite contributors, and
we received many straightforward and actionable answers.
In his feature, "Beyond the Facial," Mark Lees may have
answered the question as straightforward and actionable as
possible: "Stop doing facials and start practicing skin care."
Lees has often written about the importance of having a
"program" mentality—telling your client exactly what you
can do for them and explaining what types of treatments
(and how many visits) will get them the results they're
looking for. Practicing skin care means showing your clients
you care about their skin health not for one appointment,
but for the next 30 years.
I know this can be di cult; you don't want to be pushy
or make your client feel like you're just trying to get more
money out of them. But as someone who has seen several
estheticians who just said "thank you" after a treatment
and let me go—I want you to tell me what to do about my
hyperpigmentation and signs of aging. I want you to tell me
what treatments and products will work to make my skin
look better and will make me feel better about myself. Just
tell me, and I'll take it from there.
I hope you enjoy this issue and nd some inspiring
nuggets. And keep moving forward . . . the light is getting
brighter every day.
Stay strong,
