These contraindications are minimal and not all-inclusive. You may be working in a medical esthetic facility with varying contraindications and protocols. Always follow the directions of your medical director. WHAT TO EXPECT Most clients report a noticeable difference after just one treatment. This includes reduced redness and inflammation. 6 Results increase with consistent treatments, and clients will begin to notice a decrease in oil production, reduced pore size, and even skin tone. As with all laser/light therapy treatments, a series is recommended. There is no downtime. Clients may experience some temporary redness but can resume normal activities. Given the nature of IPL and BBL devices, unwanted changes in skin color are possible, although rare. 7 For those clients with darker skin and a higher Fitzpatrick, a longer, gentler series of treatments is required to further minimize this risk. SCOPE OF PRACTICE Each state has differing rules and regulations as to whether an esthetician can perform laser/light energy procedures. In most states, the use of these devices is limited to licensed physicians and considered the practice of medicine. However, the demand for these treatments is great, and regulations may be in place that allow estheticians to perform laser/light energy procedures under the delegation of a physician. Check with your state board before performing any procedure that uses an IPL or BBL, and be sure you have the proper training, medical director oversight, and advanced modality liability insurance. If laser light therapy is within your scope of practice, additional training is not hard to find. Be sure your training program provides a minimum of 30 hours, includes theory and hands-on training, and results in a certificate of completion. Notes 1.
