Listen to the ASCP Esty Talk podcast ascpskincare.com/podcasts 35 The histological benefits of glutathione have been known for years; however, its unique (and super) antioxidant capabilities have sparked a renaissance of interest, excitement, and innovative use in recent years. From stimulating natural production with alternative compounds to intravenous supplementation, glutathione is a VIP (very important property) in achieving and maintaining optimal healthy skin function. In the skin specifically, glutathione resets dysfunction in nearly every skin issue, making it a top-choice element to combat wrinkles, acne, dryness, and uneven, unwanted hyperpigmentation. GLUTATHIONE IN SKIN CARE Glutathione plays an important role in skin care by combating pesky pigment problems. Pigment production is affected by its mechanism of inhibiting tyrosinase and also calming inflammation and limiting oxidative damage. This reduces sporadic and trauma pigment opportunity, which means immediately solving one pigment cause. There have been many scientific studies examining glutathione's effect on hyperpigmentation. In one study, both GSH and GSSG achieved a skin lightening effect, which is optimal for addressing "old" pigment or previous damage. The same study notes glutathione not only decreases melanin mis- production in the skin but also increases skin elasticity by encouraging natural function. As we are all armed with the ability to produce our own glutathione, there are no contraindications for topical application. Because we live in a time where natural production is affected by lifestyle, we must stimulate GSH levels or supplement these levels with bio- available ingredients—inside and out. Most glutathione is made inside the body from three amino acids: glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine. As we age, glutathione levels decrease naturally. If we lived completely healthy lifestyles, our natural backstock would be sufficient to carry us into old age. But once we add in the factors of processed foods, caffeine, stress, and our current standard of living, we are challenged with a rapid depletion and, eventually, deficiency. HEALTHY SKIN, HEALTHY LIFE The adage "you are what you eat" holds true when considering natural glutathione levels in the body. A healthy, balanced diet that includes sulfur-rich foods, naturally occurring vitamin C, selenium, and even whey protein will encourage glutathione synthesis necessary for healthy body and complexion. Glutathione deficiency leads to increased opportunity for oxidative stress, which is an imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants in the body. This surplus of free radicals then leads to disease, disorder, and advanced aging. In the quest for a long, healthy life and flawless, youthful, healthy skin, glutathione is a key component. Endogenous production and external supplementation are key in maintaining effective and protective levels. Topically, hexylresorcinol stimulates natural glutathione production. Products containing both, plus antioxidants such as vitamin C, are sure to be effective for lightening and brightening any skin type and tone. Because of its anti-inflammatory capabilities and pigment regulation, glutathione is a key component in fighting against acne, as well as aging and pigmentation. GUIDE YOUR CLIENTS As licensed professionals, clients look to our expertise to guide their journey to perfect, balanced, healthy skin, and most of their concerns center around a combination of three areas: acne, aging, and pigment. Glutathione is a naturally occurring component that addresses all of these concerns by restoring healthy skin function. Consuming a nutrient-dense diet, following an effective skin care routine, and getting plenty of beauty sleep ensures the best opportunity for natural and supplemental glutathione to work its healthy skin magic.
